The lesson that life constantly enforces is ‘Look underfoot.’ You are always nearer to the true sources of your power than you think. The lure of the distant and the difficult is deceptive. The great opportunity is where you are. Don’t despise your own place and hour. Every place is the center of the world.
    –Naturalist John Burroughs

whew. a little Law and Order and off to bed. I’ve grown to appreciate waking up alone, just me and the cat. if Sweeny Todd opens tomorrow I’ll go to the matinee, otherwise I’ll watch Simon Pegg movies.

  • Underfoot is not only power, banana skins and dog shit, but also, according to C. S. Lewis, the ‘easy’ road to hell:  The safest road to hell is the gradual one – the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.
