Women and the etiquette of hats in public
Women required to remove hats in courtroom
The article so perturbed me that I sent this email:
Judge Hollenbeck,
Etiquette rules have never required women to remove their hats in situations where men may be expected to. Women covering their heads has always been a sign of obeisance and respect even as men are required to go bare-headed. God does not require women to remove their hats in his house of worship. I respectfully submit that it is presumptuous to expect more.
Requirements must allow people to follow the tenets of their religion, such as covering one’s head in public. Exceptions would have to be made. I think one such exception should have been Ms. Williams, the woman with cancer. I think it is terrible that your court rules forced Ms. Williams to choose between supporting her child and keeping her dignity.
Sincerely,

of course my mention of God’s head-covering requirements is specious as I am fairly anti-religious, but still factually correct.
What a BASTARD :O Seriously, wtf? Great email (and ditto)
I think it’s another example of someone taking their tiny speck of power to a stupid end.
He’s just a dick. Once he learned why she didnt want to remove her hat, he should have respected that.
Hows business?? Are you loving your new shop?
I am of split opinion on that…if men have to remove their hats then so should women because really…but then, it seems so needlessly authoritarian…like seriously, is *that* what we have to worry about.
I agree with BeesKneesC. I hope the judge doesn’t have any jurisdiction in family courts; you would want someone with empathy and compassion there and he obviously lacks those in spades.
I’m so proud of you! Bravo!
For as much as he carried on about his compassion in that story, I wasn’t convinced. Anyone with true compassion would have let her just leave the damn hat on. Give the poor woman a break!

Nice letter–well written. That guy was just being a complete jerk on a power trip!
Sounds like a typical tyrannical bastard judge…(most do believe they are smaller versions of gawd)
I love your letter, nice job!

RYC: I’ll give you a call when I consider myself “middle-aged.”
i think that, given our current set of “rules,” she should’ve been allowed her hat. but in the larger picture i think it’s bullshit that there are different standards/requirements of dress for different genders. hats not allowed? nobody wears one. head covering required? put one on.
and i don’t think anyone should be allowed topless in public. cuz, ew.
