Sugar, in 1988 – Springfield High School – Springfielf, Or – I and several of my fellow stage rats all lettered in Drama. We were the first in a long line. Things, they change.
awww, one down…
the girl graduates next week. whew! now I’m going to pretend I don’t have to worry about her anymore. hahahahahaha. cough.
Congratulations.
What is lettered?
what a beautiful family you’ve got! as for your son doing well in drama. does the phrase the apple never falls far from teh tree mean anything. hehe
Congratulations to him and to you for getting him through!
I can’t believe how alike your girls look…they’re beautiful.
is that you next to your son? cause if so, I really don’t feel so out of place now being shorter than my nephew who just graduated.
you have such a gorgeous family. sweetness in the eyes…they aren’t fooling me are they? it’s going to be so bittersweet when Henry becomes a man.
yay! congrats on all accounts! of course, I’d have to say that the drama thing, well, it’s dear to my heart! beautiful family!
ah, “lettered”… I am more familiar with the sports use of the verb “to letter.” when you accumulate enough varsity points you are awarded a felt letter embellished with this thick, loopy embroidery thread-type stuff. you sew it on a school jacket, wool, with leather sleeves.
I’m not sure if you’re referencing my family’s longstanding tradition in drama (or orcharding), my being a drama-queen, or my kid being something of a rotten apple lately(::smirk::)! any and all are appropriate, I suppose.
oops and that’s spelled Tanja… and while I’m at it: neither of us IS short. fucking spelling and grammar…
@satori - Nice jacket. I want one. Now I want to know what are ‘varsity points’? US culture is interesting but very different from the UK and Caribbean.
well the way I remember it (basketball/tennis/track) you get points for games/matches/meets participated in at varsity rank. there’s some threshold you meet to “letter.” if I remember correctly you can be on the varsity team and not letter if you were second string and didn’t see enough play.
oh yes, and “varsity” means first team. the first team usually keeps enough players to play, plus a “second-string” to replace “first-string” players if they are injured or need a rest. players lower on the order from there on out are “junior varsity” and can be called up. below that is another squad which are generally recreational (no league play) only or “intramurals.” through high school these rankings generally fall along class (sophomore, junior, senior) lines with exceptions for especially good (or poor) players.
@satori - Thanks for the explanations. I had always wondered what varsity was and presumed it was something to do with university, but now I know better!
I do know what you mean by sophomore etc, but none of those terms are used in the UK, its fourth form (traditionally this is the form where girls go off the rails!) fifth form (you can leave school and to to college, get a job or get married after this) sixth form (this is where you are 17 and allowed to drive) and upper sixth (when you would go to college or university and can now go into pubs and get legally drunk)! Funny really, you can get married and have a baby before you are allowed to drive and years before you can legally drink.
Gorgeous! Congrats to your son!
Congrats! I can’t believe he’s so grown up. Sniff. Seems like yesterday it was our graduation.
yeah, well when I was in high school we didn’t have indoor drama… we had to walk ten miles uphill, both ways, in the snow! wait, wrong anecdote!
dude. I feel old. They’re all growing up! Hey–I may have some of next week free. What are you doing friday night? (i work, but I could go up there after work, sleep on the couch and come back home saturday–I have a party to go to on sunday. Because you know. I’m so important.)
sounds good to me. I’m kind of a mess and probably will be come friday, but you’re used to me, right?
@satori - Um, I forgot that i was marrying people this weekend. Using my ordination for good. Um, or evil–I guess it depends on how you look at it (and i don’t know these folks).
So, no can do. Which is lame. Because it just means more work on my end. Blah. And you’re in a mess in what kind of way, eh?
I should’ve known, you’re always off marrying people. I was all kinds of stressed out cos my car broke down. they had to replace the brakes and next week they’re replacing the air intake somethingorother. lots o’ money but less than I thought it might be (thought it might be a cracked engine, yeeek).
I guess I’ll just drink whatever’s in the liquor cabinet and watch Joe vs. the Volcano. it’ll be good times. we’ll see each other next time you’re not marrying someone.
